Unit 6 · Lesson 7

Data design

5 steps. Each one is a short story and a question to answer.

Open a table with thousands of numbers. What do you understand? Probably nothing. This is where design helps.

Data design is organizing data and showing it clearly and understandably.

The goal is for people to reach the information fast and use it correctly, without confusion.

Same data, but organized and shaped so it helps you understand and decide.

Raw data
Many scattered numbers
Hard to understand
Designed data
Organized and clear
Reaches you fast
VS
Data design = organizing and showing data clearly so it is understood and used

What is the main goal of data design?

What is data design?

Data design = organizing and showing data clearly so it is understood and used. Data design is organizing data and showing it clearly and understandably. The goal is for people to reach the information fast and use it correctly, without confusion.

The five methods of data design

Abstraction, pictogram, icon, visualization, structuring. Abstraction: remove extra details and keep what matters. Pictogram: a simple picture that expresses an idea. Icon: a small symbol that stands for an action or thing. Visualization: a chart showing relations and numbers.

The interface and the experience

UI = the interface, UX = the experience, usability and accessibility mark good design. User experience (UX) is your whole feeling while using the product: easy or tiring? A good interface has usability: simple and clear, and accessibility: it suits everyone, even people with disabilities.

LATCH: organizing information

LATCH = Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, Hierarchy. L Location, like maps. A Alphabet, like a directory. T Time, like timelines. C Category, like store sections.

Example: the school library

We combine several LATCH ways together to find information fast. Split books into sections: science, literature, history. That is Category (C). Inside each section, arrange books by author names. That is Alphabet (A).
