Unit 7 · Lesson 1

Computer architecture

5 steps. Each one is a short story and a question to answer.

A computer is not one thing. It is many parts working together.

The parts you can touch and see are called hardware.

Devices attached from outside are called peripherals, including input devices like the keyboard.

And output like the screen and printer, plus devices that do both like a touch screen.

Hardware and peripherals

Peripherals: input (keyboard), output (printer), and both (touch screen). The parts you can touch and see are called hardware. Devices attached from outside are called peripherals, including input devices like the keyboard.

The main units

CU + ALU = the CPU, with memory, storage, input and output. The control unit (CU) organizes and directs the other units. The arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) does the operations. Together they are the CPU, the brain of the computer.

What each unit does

RAM is temporary and fast, secondary storage is permanent. The main memory (RAM) holds data temporarily while running, and loses it when the device is off. Secondary storage such as SSD, HDD and USB keeps data permanently.

Data flow and control flow

Data flow = data moving, control flow = organizing signals. Data flow: moving the data itself between units, such as from input to memory to the CPU. Control flow: the signals the control unit sends to tell each unit what to do and when.

Interfaces: USB, HDMI, Ethernet

Interface = connection: USB for devices, HDMI for screens, Ethernet for networks. An interface is the means of connection between two components so they exchange data. USB connects flash drives and mice. HDMI connects a screen with sound and picture.

Questions about this lesson

What are the main units of a computer?
The control unit, the arithmetic and logic unit, main memory, secondary storage, and input and output units.
What is the CPU?
The control unit together with the arithmetic and logic unit; it is the brain that executes instructions.
What is the difference between RAM and storage?
Main memory (RAM) holds temporary data lost when the device is off, while secondary storage (SSD, HDD) keeps data permanently.
What is an interface?
A means of connection between two components, such as USB, HDMI and Ethernet.
